The company was started by Walter Thurtle, who saw a gap in the market for an independent waste company to collect waste from holiday camps and companies involved in the tourist industry.
The business was soon collecting waste from several camps in Norfolk, and expanded into collecting general waste from other premises, particularly those in Great Yarmouth. Walter’s son Max then started working for the business after leaving school in 1994, and is now a director and transport manager.
In 2005 the company moved from its small storage yard into a purpose-designed waste transfer and recycling facility on the Harfreys Industrial Estate, Great Yarmouth. At the same time the company started to offer skip hire services, with the skip waste being sorted in the facility.
Walter’s eldest son, Gary, also moved back from London to work for the business and gain his NVQ in Waste Management Operations. He is also a director and general manager.
The business launched a trade waste recycling service to its customers in 2008, adding to its green credentials. The trade waste, ‘wheeled bin’ arm of the business was then sold to Norfolk waste management company Glazewing, leaving WT Waste free to concentrate on skip hire, roll-on and recycling services.
Today Walter continues to be a director of the business, along with his two sons, who manage a small, dedicated team.
